This fantastic recipe is one of the four healthy (and purple -how cool is it ?!) recipes I have created for a campaign with Ruw Gym and Marketplace by Live Well to get the best of your gym routine. For the record, Ruw Gym is a new gym attached to the Royal University of Woman here in Bahrain and I am so excited to help them create healthy food habits amongst their students. So having this black goji berry smoothie on hand will help you to avoid flagging halfway through your gym routine ! For this reason this black goji berry smoothie is perfect before workout but it is also great after exercising to fix any post workout hunger.

Making your own smoothie is for me a simple habit that has a huge impact : it fuels you before or after workout, gives you a ton of health benefits and you gulp more vegetables and fruits than you ever did before.

Smoothie is a plant-powered lifestyle that helps if you are trying to lose weight, improve your fitness level or stay fit !

So, Guys, if you don’t have it yet, the best would be to invest in a blender that matches your lifestyle (big family or not, daily smoothie or once a week,..).

Vitamix and Blendtec are known to be the best on the market for their performance and warranty.

Breville and then nutribullet (single use too) are another good option, especially if you are on a budget.

5 delicious ingredients for this purple smoothie

This black goji berry (purple!) smoothie recipe requires only 5 ingredients (high in nutrients and that’s what we are looking for).

Black goji berry powder (they have a very dark purple color) is a very specific ingredient from Rawnice that I love for its antioxidants but also to get this beautiful purple color (or ‘instagrammable color’). It helps to eliminate toxins. It has HIGHER antioxidants capacities than red goji berry and it is funnier too ! You only use a teaspoon for this recipe so you can do few smoothies with a packet, don’t worry.

Oat makes it thicker and keeps you full (to go through your entire workout). It gives you long lasting energy.

Cashew butter has protein, iron, potassium, vitamin K, calcium. Be sure to choose it unsweetened, unsalted. The ingredient list must be : only cashews. It adds a delicious nutty flavor to this smoothie recipe.

Mixed frozen berries are extremely nutritious and high in antioxidants.

Almond milk is naturally rich in vitamin E and has protein too.

Optionally, you could add Maple syrup or one date. It depends of your own taste (and it depends of the berries, if they are sweet or not that much). I personally prefer without any sweetener but this is a matter of taste. Maple syrup has actually antioxidants and minerals while dates have B vitamin and magnesium.

Definitely, this black goji berry smoothie has a lot to offer and is a powerhouse drink.

Nothing is simpler than this black goji berry smoothie

You can find black goji berry powder at Marketplace (by Live Well) in Bahrain or wherever you are you can buy it online ! There must be other brands available too. And you will find oat, cashew butter, frozen berries and almond milk at Marketplace too and/or at any grocery store.

For this fantastic recipe, all you need is to mix all the ingredients together in a high speed blender. There is nothing to cut, peel or clean !

Blend, blend, blend and your portable power breakfast is ready ! Just throw this delicious and healthy drink into a jar or a recycle bottle and it is done !

Cherry on the cake : this very simple smoothie tastes awesome !

Are smoothies flexible ?

Once you have your base smoothie (fruits, veggies, liquid) you can still add a bunch of nutritious extras : avocado, leafy greens like young spinach or cucumber.

And to boost the nutrition profile of your smoothie you can always add some protein powder. Just be sure to pick a flavor that goes with your ingredients and that’s it.

Seeds and nut butter are a great addition because it adds healthy fat and more protein.

And if you fancy something spicy, don’t hesitate to add some fresh ginger or turmeric!

BLACK GOJI BERRY SMOOTHIE

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 tsp black goji berry powder
  • 2 tbsp small oat flakes
  • 1 tbsp cashew butter - (or any other nut butter)
  • 1 cup frozen berries - (mixed or strawberries, raspberries or even cherries)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup or 1 date - (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Blend all the ingredients until smooth.
  • Pour in a jar and enjoy.
