After the holiday season filled with delicious (but often indulgent) treats, our bodies might be craving a refresh. Enter the mighty wheatgrass shot, a powerful detoxifier packed with essential vitamins and minerals. This detox wheatgrass recipe uses a splash of fresh squeezed orange to add a delicious sweet taste (less grassy) to this green shot. It is perfect for vegans and anyone looking for an easy, at-home way to jumpstart their cleanse. I love to do it for few days or more, from time to time. Because the chlorophyll, abundant in wheatgrass, is thought to help cleanse the body of toxins.

In the past, I have done my wheatgrass shot from fresh wheatgrass and from the powder that you can find at your organic grocery store. This detox wheatgrass shot recipe offers here both options.

Fresh wheatgrass or powder?

You might be surprised but you can find sometimes fresh wheatgrass at the supermarket or at the farm (even in Bahrain I bought it fresh from the supermarket). Another option would be to grow your wheatgrass if you fancy that. It seems to be very easy but I have never tried it out.

To make wheatgrass shots from fresh wheatgrass, you’ll have to wash it well first. Then using a slow juicer, for maximum nutrient extraction, make this beautiful green wheatgrass juice (if you don’t have a slow juicer, you can use a blender but you need to strain it through a cloth or a nut milk bag).

If you don’t have time or you can’t find some fresh wheatgrass, you can always buy wheatgrass powder in any organic supermarket too. You’ll just have to blend 1 tablespoon of wheatgrass powder with some water.

You can even add this wheatgrass powder to your daily smoothie.

But how to improve the grassy taste?

Let’s be honest, wheatgrass shots can be grassy. To my palate, fresh wheatgrass has a slightly sweet aftertaste while powder wheatgrass is bitter. And I wanted to make it more palatable.

So thanks to the addition of fresh orange juice for a fruity flavor (and a vitamin addition), this easy wheatgrass recipe transforms your wheatgrass shot (from fresh or powder) from tolerable to tasty.

Or you could go for other flavor combinations:

For a sweet touch: a hint of natural sweetness goes a long way. Try honey (if not strictly vegan), maple syrup, or 1 date. Or you could use some coconut water.

For a spicy kick: add ginger, mint, or a squeeze of lemon zest (in your juicer or your blender).

What if I want to juice my fresh wheatgrass all at once?

One time I ended up with a huge tray of fresh wheatgrass. To gain time and make sure you use it at its freshest, you can slow juice the whole batch, add fresh orange juice, and mix well. Then you will carefully pour the juice into clean ice cube trays, filling each compartment to about ¾ full (leaving some headspace to avoid overflowing if it expands).

Finally, freeze it. The day after (once frozen solid) empty the wheatgrass ice cubes into a freezer-safe container or zip-lock bag and store it in your freezer for up to 3 months.

Now you can use these wheatgrass ice cubes for any smoothie or in a glass of water.

How long does this detox recipe last in the fridge?

This recipe is designed for 2 medium shots or for a half-week detox for 2 people (6 small shots), but feel free to adjust the duration to your preference.

Consistency is key for everything, so aim for a shot daily, ideally on an empty stomach in the morning.

Why is wheatgrass so trendy in the wellness community?

If you check online you’ll see that there are probably 100 good reasons to drink wheatgrass. It seems to contain over 90 minerals, to aid the body’s digestive process, to boost your metabolism and to help to burn fat.

A glass of wheatgrass juice is full of chlorophyll, helping to clean the skin from the inside (after a week of wheatgrass I see the difference on my skin) with a strong alkalizing effect.

Finally, a wheatgrass shot seems to be an excellent source of natural energy !
