Vegan Poke With Marinated Tofu

Vegan Tofu Poke in a bowl

This vegan poke is made with marinated tofu, Hawaiian style. It is amazing especially if you are vegan!

If you’ve been to Hawaii (I went to Maui and it remains one of my most beautiful destinations I have ever done), you know that POKE is a raw fish salad in Hawaiian cuisine. It’s usually made with yellowfin tuna. It all starts with a well seasoned base that makes POKE so special. POKE’s ingredients are raw tuna, green onions, soy sauce and sesame oil.

So I created my own vegan poke, made with tofu to align with my plant-based lifestyle.

The key for the recipe is that I use Tamari or Liquid Aminos, instead of soy sauce, for a gluten free version. A great addition is to incorporate toasted sesame oil (from Meridian) and green nori sprinkle (from Clearspring) for more flavors and intensity.

In this vegan poke, I substitute raw tuna with some firm tofu. Best of all, this marinated tofu is so simple. Once you’ve mixed all the ingredients together, you let it marinate for 1h (or more) and it’s ready !

But you can easily try out this POKE seasonings and add whatever you want. You can do it with tuna (best to marinate it for 2 hours at least), cooked beetroot or any other hearty vegetable too !

Turn it into a fantastic vegan poke bowl with a base made of rice and a lot of tasty vegetables for topping !

Top Tip

Tofu (regular or silken) is often labeled soft, medium firm, firm, or extra firm. Silken tofu has a softer consistency than regular tofu. I prefer to use silken tofu in creamy and blended foods.

For this recipe, it is better to go for firm or extra firm regular tofu (because the soft is more crumbly).
